Historically the main methods of subsea leak detection relied on obvious signals (bubbles, plumes, oil films etc.). As these may not always be present, small leaks can go undetected. Permanent leak detection monitoring systems should be simple, robust and reliable and must consider the environmental setup, e.g. under ice, deep water, etc. The challenge is to discover and implement the best available technology for each field application.
CONTROS, in cooperation with its partner CCS-Consultants GmbH
, has developed a permanent Leak Detection Monitoring System, which is designed to meet the above given criteria. The system is stable for at least 12 months and monitors hydrocarbon emissions around subsea installations even under harsh environmental conditions and changing methane background concentrations in the ambient water (e.g. caused by natural emissions of biogenic methane).
