CONTROS sold leading edge monitoring system for
Lake Kivu/Rwanda to Contour Global
A monitoring system was sold to Contour Global in order to measure the methane, carbon dioxide concentration and other fresh water parameters incl. H2S, conductivity, temperature, depth, O2 and pH of Lake Kivu in Rwanda. The backbone of the monitoring system for this very particularly challenging KivuWatt Projek consists of the CONTROS HydroC™ High-Pressure CH4 and CO2 sensors.
Naturally occurring methane and dissolved carbon dioxide are trapped in Lake Kivu at significant depth of the lake and are increasing on a daily basis. Project KivuWatt will draw on the trapped methane and dissolved carbon dioxide and process it for power generation; at the same time releasing the gas will reduce the risk of a potentially explosively release, which could cause a serious environmental incident.

Subsea and Arctic Leak Detection Symposium (SALDS)
Houston, Texas on 8-9th November
Following a successful event in 2010 CONTROS CEO Daniel Esser became part of the advisory board for this year’s Subsea & Arctic Leak Detection Symposium (SALDS). Hosted by Shell, and co-chaired by Steven Wong (ExxonMobil) and Sandeep Patni (Shell) the symposium addresses the special challenges of leak detection in subsea, surface and arctic environments.
All leak detection issues will be discussed, but SALDS will provide a special focus on multiphase lines, where it has previously been thought leak detection was not possible. Multiphase pipelines carry oil, gas, and water in any combination produced from one or more oil wells. The event will address the gaps and begin solving the problems with multiphase pipelines, as an industry.
Sören Themann, Managing Director of the German company Meeriana GmbH, one of CONTROS partners, will give a key talk at the event on November 8th and 9th addressing the “Latest Results on Early Leak Detection” also using the CONTROS early leak detection sensor suite.

Subsea and Arctic Leak Detection Symposium (SALDS)
Houston, Texas on 6-7th October
CONTROS is an official sponsor of the 2nd Subsea and Arctic Leak Detection Symposiumheld next week in Houston Texas on 6-7th October.
The Symposium will promote exchange of information between oil & gas companies, regulators, service providers, students and researchers in the field of leak detection. SALDS will exhibit leak detection methods and will cover topics like unique challenges of leak detection and flowline monitoring in inaccessible areas of the subsea and arctic environments, as well as the lack of inlet flowrates and multiphase flows.
CONTROS demonstrates its high sophisticated, cost-efficient and easy-to-use systems for subsea early leak detection and a user presentation is given by one of our clients, Soeren Themann from CCS Consulting in applications such as methane hydrate research, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), ocean acidification, greenhouse gas monitoring, pipeline inspection, long-term monitoring systems for subsea installations, among others.
At SALDS CONTROS will display the new developed Early Leak Detection System, in cooperation with a report of a CONTROS system user and the possibility to test the new system yourself.

The CONTROS HydroC™/ CO2 successful in ACT test
The Alliance for Coastal Technologies (ACT), supported by NOAA, conducted a field performance demonstration and evaluation from August to November 2009. ACT’s unbiased, third party evaluation focused on the accuracy, precision and reliability of commercial in-situ pCO2 instruments such as the CONTROS HydroC™/ CO2. Tests were conducted at sites with significant variation in pCO2 (daily and weekly cycles) and the systems have been compared against well-chosen reference systems.
The full report is available at: www.act-us.info/evaluation_reports
Reference systems:
- Flow- through pCO2 Analyzer (LICOR LI840/ membrane contactor equilibrator)
- Discrete water sampling (pH and total alkalinity calculated to pCO2 with CO2 Sys/ Pierrot)
Results of HydroC™/ CO2:
- The systems tested functioned continuously throughout the month long test period
- The systems acquired 100 % of the data expected
- The systems collected 10 times the data of the reference systems
- Biofouling did not affect performance during the duration of the test
- The mean difference (HydroC™ - Reference) is within the given uncertainty interval given by the uncertainties of the instrument and the reference systems.
- “The time-series provided by the HydroC™/ CO2 revealed diel patterns in CO2 and captured a significantly greater dynamic range and temporal resolution then could be obtained from discrete reference samples.”
Conclusions:
- As a result of this performance test CONTROS has increased the quality standards for built- in NDIR sensors (e.g. stability, drift, cross sensitivity).
- Analytical filters will be included into the internal gas stream to prevent dust, dirt or any other reversible contamination.
- Update of the algorithms for the NDIR data processing to be implemented.
